The new Macang Buddhist Monastery adapts the city landmark
St. Patrick’s, the oldest frame church in San Francisco, into a group
residence.The original wood
structure, relocated several times to various sites throughout the City, was
again moved on site and reincarnated as a Buddhist Monastery for visiting
worshipers to the adjacent Macang Buddhist Temple. The original church hall was reused and its historical exterior restored.A new four-story head house replaced an accumulation of
additions at the rear of the structure. The new addition is clad with ribbed metal panels and a pitched roof
form.
