This project was a complete renovation of a generic 1950’s
single family home in San Francisco. The house has sweeping views from the rear of the Golden Gate and its
namesake park.The house is
located on a down sloping lot, so the middle level contains a two car
garage.Main living spaces are
located at the top floor and sleeping and family areas on the entry and garden
levels.
Concept:
The house opens to the formerly obscured view to the
rear. The rooms are a series of
interlocking rectangular volumes defined by natural light.Space, both real and perceived is
defined through out by the use of materials.
Internal Organization:
Entry from the street is through a series of
defined transitional spaces.A
driveway court leads to a semi private garden and then to an external stair
passage with the transition from public to private is reinforced at each.Arrival is on the top level where an
open living area frames the view beyond.Flanking the formal living space is a secluded diningarea, stair to the lower floors and
family kitchen.The top level also
contains a guest suite and study which face the front of the house. The street
level contains the family & master suite. The lowest floor at the garden level contains the children’s
rooms.
